salamanderEach spring the first warm (above 40°F) rainy night after the spring equinox brings hundreds of spotted salamanders, spring peepers, and wood frogs up from underground lairs to eerily creep toward swampy puddles, or vernal pools, on the soggy forest floor of Labrador Hollow. To join Baltimore Woods' Naturalists on an evening fieldtrip (6:30 - 9PM) to witness the mysterious migration as it occurs sometime between March 24 and April 4 - contact us by phone at 673-1350 to be placed on a watch list, or look for alerts on www.takeahike.org to find out what night(s) this migration will most likely take place, what you can do to protect these amphibians, and when we will make the field trip to Labrador Hollow. Baltimore Woods challenges you to leave no log unturned as you search for as many salamanders, slugs, and centipedes as you can find. Bring your family and grungy clothes! Teams that finds the most slimy springtime creatures will be honored with a plaque in the John A. Weeks Interpretive Center. Please register! Members $2, families $5, non-members $5, families $15.

The John Weeks Bird Club teams up with Onondaga Audubon for a visit to Derby Hill, a key waypoint for raptors and song birds on their migration around the Great Lakes. Meet naturalist Tom Meier at Baltimore Woods to carpool. Please register! Donations appreciated.

Sun. 20Nature in the City Lecture Series: Urban Stream Restoration — 2 pm at Betts Branch Library in Syracuse
Dr. Ted Endreny, SUNY-ESF professor, speaks about the ecological and human forces that shape Onondaga Creek and the greenspaces along its banks. Join us for the third lecture of a four part series, as Baltimore Woods and SUNY-ESF partner to educate Syracuse on developing and maintaining sustainable parks and green spaces. Want to make your neighborhood greener? Listen to valuable advice from SUNY ESF professors about restoration of natural areas, and the ecological forces that shape them. Betts Branch Library is located at 4862 South Salina St., Syracuse. FREE.
