Dee Atkinson Arboretum Trail

Mr. Bob Atkinson helps reveal the new sign marking Dee Atkinson Arboretum Trail, and Family and friends listen as John Weeks leads the tour of the arboretum.

Ar bo re tum (är'bəré' təm) , n. a plot of land where many different trees or shrubs are grown for study or display.

The Dee Atkinson Arboretum serves as a living guide for those interested in learning about the role of our various native and imported trees and shrubs. Identifying and learning about each specimen allows us to further understand the complex interactions between trees - the flora surrounding them and the wildlife that use them.

Visiting our arboretum will reinforce your knowledge of these trees and shrubs, and enhance your woodland experiences. Look for the wooden posts that identify the Arboretum trees. In the initial development of the Arboretum, memorial gifts helped the collection grow and those trees are noted. Opportunities are available for additional memorial gifts.

The memorial arboretum at Baltimore Woods was dedicated in June, 1990 to the memory of “Dee” Atkinson, a former board member and strong supporter of Centers for Nature Education, Inc. (CNE). Dee loved the Baltimore woods site and frequently hiked the trails, attended programs, and used her experiences here to strengthen her bond with the environment. We hope that visitors will have a sense of the joy and enlightenment that Dee experienced at Baltimore Woods.

“Some people go to church to speak with our creator and pray for strength. I come to Baltimore Woods. Lofty Eastern Hemlock and American Beech do as much for my soul as any man-made spire. Gentle songs of wood thrushes and wrens fill my heart as well as any organ sonata. Here I feel at one with the on-goingness of life, my definition of God.”
