Sat. 1 — Saturday Fly Tie 11am-Noon Trout season is right around the corner, so get your flies tied now! Visit naturalist Tom Meier at The Woods to learn and share fly tying techniques. Don’t forget your tools and materials! FREE.

March is the month for maple sugaring, join naturalist Tom Meier for a tour of the Baltimore Woods Sugarbush. Program for adults w/ talks, snacks, and hikes rated easy (E), moderate (M), or vigorous (V). Please register! Members free, nonmembers $3.
Fri. 7 — Star Party: Farewell to Winter Skies 6:30-8:30pm Late winter skies, with hopefully moderating temperatures, are ideal for viewing deep space objects, like nebulae and star clusters, through the telescopes of astronomer Bob Piekiel. Sat. 8 — Sticky Scout Day 11am-Noon, 1-2pm, 3-4pm Scouts, if the maple sap and syrup doesn’t leave you sticky, the muddy trails will! Come experience hands-on demonstrations of the maple sugaring process at the pioneer cabin. Please register for one of the hour-long tours! $4/scout, leaders and parents FREE.
Sat. 15 — Nature in the City: Eastwood’s Maple Magic @ Sunnycrest Park 10:30-11:30am Experience the magic of maple sugaring right in your backyard! Join Sunnycrest Park Association and naturalist Matt Kauffman for a demonstration of how maple syrup can be made even in an urban backyard. Please register! Donations appreciated.
Sun. 16 — Nature in the City Lecture Series: Beneath the Surface of Onondaga Creek: What the Eco-Blitz Tells Us About Stream Ecology — 2 pm at Betts Library in Syracuse Dr. Karin Limburg, SUNY-ESF professor, speaks about Onondaga Creek and how development affects the ecology, water quality, and biota of the watershed. Join us for the second lecture of a four part series, as Baltimore Woods and SUNY-ESF partner to educate Syracuse on developing and maintaining sustainable parks and green spaces. Want to make your neighborhood greener? Listen to valuable advice from SUNY ESF professors about restoration of natural areas, and the ecological forces that shape them. Betts Branch Library is located at 4862 South Salina St., Syracuse. FREE.
Sun. 16 — Green Breakfast 7:30am-Noon Just in time for St. Patrick’s Day, Marcellus Rotary and Baltimore Woods invite you to this green (ecologically sustainable) breakfast at Marcellus High School! This breakfast is eco friendly, from the food to the forks! We've even got utensils made of potato starch “plastic” that degrades within months. Wed. 19 — Onondaga Audubon Lecture: Invasion! 7-9pm The John Weeks Bird Club presents Matt Young of the Onondaga Audubon Society and his presentation on the irruption of finches that invaded CNY feeders this winter. Come learn how to better ID these birds as they visit your feeders. Please register! Donations appreciated.
Mon. March 24 - Fri. April 4 — AMPHIBIAN ALERT!
Each spring the first warm (above 40°F) rainy night after the spring equinox brings hundreds of spotted salamanders, spring peepers, and wood frogs up from underground lairs to eerily creep toward swampy puddles, or vernal pools, on the soggy forest floor of Labrador Hollow. To join Baltimore Woods' Naturalists on an evening fieldtrip (6:30 - 9PM) to witness the mysterious migration as it occurs sometime between March 24 and April 4 - contact us by phone at 673-1350 to be placed on a watch list, or look for alerts on www.takeahike.org to find out what night(s) this migration will most likely take place, what you can do to protect these amphibians, and when we will make the field trip to Labrador Hollow. Sat. 29 — Maples and Music 1-4pm Celebrate the sweetness of spring with the sweet music of Marcellus Bluegrass and sweet maple treats fresh from the Baltimore Woods sugarbush.
